Located in the heart of London, The Place is the UK’s premier centre for contemporary dance. A powerhouse for dance development, it is leading the way in dance training, creation and performance. Over the course of forty years The Place has established itself as one of Europe’ s most innovative dance spaces. It attracts artists from all over the world who come here to push creative boundaries, experiment and to perform outstanding new work for audiences who expect to be surprised, inspired and delighted. The theatre presents over 200 performances a year, including festivals and special events such as Resolution, the UK's biggest festival for emerging artists and Something Happening For Kids family day. The theatre has a strong reputation for its international programming alongside supporting UK based dance artists and is a part of the European Dancehouse Network.
What makes The Place so distinctive is its unparalleled offer of activity and the unique opportunities created by having so much available under one roof. Home to the Robin Howard Dance Theatre, the Richard Alston Dance Company and the London Contemporary Dance School, it houses a purpose-built centre with some of the best studios in the city. It also offers an extensive programme of classes and courses for adults and children of all ages and dance abilities.
The London Contemporary Dance School is a world-class conservatoire, offering vocational training to the highest technical and artistic standards. It runs undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research programmes to over 190 students each year from across the world. The Centre for Advanced Training offers pre-vocational level training to young people (aged 11-18) from across the south of England.
The Place has an outstanding track record as a seed bed for developing new choreographic talent, having nurtured and supported many of the UK’s most outstanding choreographers long before they became well-known successes.
