Open Open 2018 – Celebrating our inner artist
This year, for the first time, I took part in Open Open, an annual art exhibition held at Swiss Cottage Gallery, Swiss Cottage Library. The exhibition runs 9 August – 15 September 2018.
I am showing a photograph entitled Rear View, a playful approach to wildlife photography, taken using slide film.
What I love about Open Open, perfectly described in its title, is its spirit of democracy and inclusion. It’s a simple idea whereby everybody and anybody – whether practicing professionally or dabbling in art - is invited to bring along one piece of artwork to display.
There are no judges and no selection process. All art is given a space. With this comes an element of surprise. No-one - the people taking part, the curator, the viewers - knows what to expect. And that is joyful.
It is a celebration of humans as creative beings, of community, and of taking part. It is as much – if not more – about people and their creativity – as about the final works of art.
Head along to the exhibition and see for yourself. You might even be tempted to take part in next year’s show!
Exhibition running until 15 September 2018, Swiss Cottage Gallery (inside Swiss Cottage Library).
