Christmas Events at the Dickens Museum

“It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.” - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Christmas is approaching, and to celebrate the up and coming festive season the Dickens Museum in Camden is hosting a series of fantastic events related to the famous novel and its author. Join LoveCamden for a costumed walk past landmarks in Victorian history, readings of A Christmas Carol, or an amazing Christmas performance on Christmas Eve at Dickens’ house! Get into the Christmas spirit at the Dickens Museum!

1. Christmas Walks

“For again Scrooge saw himself. He was older now, a man in the prime of life. His face had not the harsh and rigid lines of later years, but it had begun to wear the signs of care and avarice. There was an eager, greedy, restless motion in the eye, which showed the passion that had taken root, and where the shadow of the growing tree would fall.” - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Join the Dickens Museum on a costumed tour through the historic city, and imagine yourself as a character in the famous novel as you visit the sites believed to have inspired Dickens to write his story.

2. A Christmas Carol performed by Dominic Gerrard

“It is required of every man," the ghost returned, "that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow-men, and travel far and wide; and, if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death.” - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Join the Dickens Museum for an exclusive, candle-lit one-man performance of A Christmas Carol, by actor Dominic Gerrard.

3. A Christmas Carol with Professor Michael Slater

“I will live in the past, the present, and the future. The spirits of all three shall strive within me.” - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

The great professor Michael Slater MBE returns to the Dickens Museum to bring the A Christmas Carol to the public. Famous for his readings, this is a performance you cannot miss!

4. Christmas by Candlelight

“There was nothing very cheerful in the climate or the town, and yet was there an air of cheerfulness abroad that the clearest summer air and brightest summer sun might have endeavoured to diffuse in vain.” - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Dickens was a great fan of candlelight, so to stay true to the nature of the conditions his work was created in, the Dickens Museum will host an evening during which Dickens’ house will be completely lit by candlelight – just like in the olden days!

5. Christmas Housemaid's Tour

“Come in, -- come in! and know me better, man! I am the Ghost of Christmas Present. Look upon me! You have never seen the like of me before!” - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Tonight, the housemaid at 48 Doughty Street opens the doors of Dickens’ home to the public. Join now for a sneak peak into the history of one of Britain’s most famous authors!

6. Another Christmas Carol: Christmas Eve

“I don't know what to do!" cried Scrooge, laughing and crying in the same breath; and making a perfect Laocoön of himself with his stockings. "I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to every-body! A happy New Year to all the world! Hallo here! Whoop! Hallo!” - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

On Christmas Eve, Equapoise Theatre proudly presents Another Christmas Carol: an immersive theatre production that takes up Dicken’s house as its stage. Spreading out over all the floors of the house, this is the Christmas event of the year!
