Sculpture, video and photographic works made using a mix of artificial intelligence (AI)
algorithms trained on astronomical datasets (scientific images of deep space), and related
holdings from Swiss Cottage Library, consider the library’s potential as a container for all
knowledge.
Software architecture is referenced in RAW Materials, a series of monumental sculptures –
one occupying the library’s atrium – wrapped with images from the Hubble Space
Telescope. These images also form part of the training dataset used in the making of Hill’s
Through Machine & Darkness, a video work made using an AI/machine learning. Her
photographic series Containers documents the timeworn bindings of various astronomy
and physics books found in the library and further abstracts them using mathematical
paper folding techniques. The works contrast the Modernist grid of the architecture with
computational processes and structures. Together they play with notions of construction and
ruin.
