Jo Brocklehurst - Nobodies and Somebodies

Jo Brocklehurst drew live in the punk squats, theatres and fetish clubs of London, Berlin and New York. From the 1960s until 2006, her work captured the cutting-edge of alternative culture.

Wheeling a shopping trolley full of neon pastels, UV paint and pencils into punk squats in Hampstead, bars like The Blitz and clubnights such as the Skin Two Rubber Ball, Brocklehurst would set up her drawing board in the corner and create huge portraits of the most flamboyant characters – always working at furious speed. Co-curated by House of Illustration’s Olivia Ahmad with Isabelle Bricknall – Brocklehurst’s model and muse, this major retrospective exhibits a prolific output that has been little seen until now. 100 figurative portraits chronicle the subversion of subculture, exploring gender, sexuality and identity.

Boundary-breaking reinterpretations of gender and sexuality.” AnOther Magazine
