Steffi Klenz, Boss B & Brownsilla at Maiden Lane
In 2019 photographic artist Steffi Klenz worked in collaboration with Maiden Lane rappers Brownsilla and Boss B as artists in residence at the Camden Local Studies and Archives centre, London. Together, they researched the archives drawing inspiration from the material to shape new art work. They explored Maiden Lane, a social housing estate in Camden, researching its architectural impact and sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences with residents to inform their work. With colleagues and material from the archive, the artists held an event at Maiden Lane community centre to share stories, history and collaborate with residents to include in their work. Residents’ hands were photographed, posed shaping letters in sign language, which appear in the new artworks.
Together Steffi, Brownsilla and Boss B made a new album of sounds and images called Tensed Muscles.

Camden Close Up: Steffi Klenz
We spoke with Steffi Klenz, who since the spring of 2019 has collaborated with the rap artists Brownsilla and Boss B on this project. As artists in residence at the Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre, they explored the histories of the social housing complex Maiden Lane Estate in Camden, using maps, newspapers, court reports and images. Weaving these stories with their own experiences of living and being in London, Klenz and Browsilla and Boss B reflected on what has been, and of its relevance to lives today. Klenz is also working on the body of work Tensed Muscles to be exhibited in a solo-exhibition.
