Frieze Art Fair

Top 30 things in Camden: Frieze Art Fair

Each year the city floods with art enthusiasts during Frieze week: one of the biggest and most influential contemporary art fairs in the world with editions in London and New York, as well as a magazine, talks programme, specially commissioned arts projects and an artist-led education schedule. The art event of the year, Frieze Week is known to every art-lover as the place to be, see and discuss matters of contemporary art in the 21st century. Born in 1991 with the launch of frieze magazine, the art fair in London’s Regent’s Park features over a 170 contemporary art galleries and attracts over 60,000 visitors each year, most of whom are collectors, curators, journalists, gallerists, critics, artists and the general art-loving public. The whole of London rocks up, either to collect works or to simply enjoy the exhibition.

In adjunction to Frieze week London you can find Frieze Masters: a separate but related fair that covers art from ancient to modern times. The two fairs are within walking distance from each other and combination tickets are available.

During the fair there is a lot to see and do besides watching art. There is an extensive talks programme, for example. Talks are tailored to each individual fair and offer a more in depth, diverse and engaging conversation with the artists and their work. Asides from talks, the fair hosts performances, openings and a range of other events, and since 2007, the fair hosts a series of commissioned film premieres on site.

In 2016 Frieze expanded its emporium even more with the addition of Frieze Academy, a unique line-up of talks, symposiums and workshops exploring all aspects of art and culture. Frieze Academy offers unparalleled insider access to the individuals and institutions that make the international contemporary art scene thrive – with speakers who are all leading artists, collectors, curators, critics and academics. And the best thing is: you don’t have to wait for the fair to join! You can sign up via the website.
