Exhibition: 6th March – 15th April, 2017
We are pleased that Tulip Siddiq, MP for Hampstead and Kilburn will open the London Quilters Exhibition 2017 on the 9th March.
London Quilters are welcomed back for their eigth exhibition in Swiss Cottage Gallery. The large selection of quilts that are on display have been made and, in most cases, designed by the members of London Quilters. The quilts in this exhibition provide a significant insight into the broad spectrum of this art.
Originally created to serve as a utilitarian piece of bedding, the quilt was designed for daily use. Often its best side was turned over only when there were visitors, such as the doctor. The quilt can be seen as an heirloom that reflects the sentiments and history of its creators and owners. Traditional quilts were generally made from worn scraps of fabric, but these days a quilt can include any form of material, from paper to wood, though there must always be more than one layer. Quilt-making has developed into an art form in its own right, something that can be seen clearly in the many artistic quilts displayed in this exhibition.
As in previous years the centrepiece of the exhibition is a collaborative quilt project by many of the members of London Quilters. The quilt is called ‘London Calling’ and is a double bed quilt. Creating a ‘group quilt’ is a significant part of quilting, both historically and the present. Working together in this way on a shared piece of art helps forge wonderful friendships between the quilters involved.
‘London Calling’ is being raffled to raise money for the Mind and Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity.
London Quilters are a group of around 90 textile enthusiasts who meet monthly at the Crossfield Centre in Camden. As well as listening to talks from leading figures in patchwork and other quilting related subjects, they regularly share their most recent work and experiences with other members.
